I'm sorry... what now?

This is getting ridiculous. I am not going to ask forgiveness or apologize for the color of my skin - just as I would NEVER ask anyone else to do so. I am not going to seek out designers based on the color of their skin - white, black, brown, purple, or green. I am not going to seek out designers based on their physical or mental abilities either... or their age... or where they live... or any other non-issue factor because when you do that, you are still being discriminatory.

I base my decisions on the product at hand, on the beauty of the design, and on the price versus quality for which the product is being offered. Those are my deciding factors. I don't need to know about anything else, just as the seller doesn't need to know those things about me.

Can you imagine walking into a store and asking if the maker of the product was of a specific ethnic background? Would you ask if the designer of the product had any physical or mental challenges? Could you even fathom asking about what the person did behind closed doors in their own bedroom? I should hope not - because those things have absolutely no baring on whether or not the product that caught your eye is worth the price they are asking for it. The item is something you want, you have the funds, then purchase it. Plain and simple.

If you like it, buy. If you don't, don't buy it. The rest of the story is not something that has any weight in the process. Buying from a person because of the color of their skin is just as disgusting as not buying for the same reason. You show honor and respect for the item which, in turns, bestows honor and respect to the one who created it.

I grew up in Alabama. I know racism. I have seen it first hand. This is so not that. Stop it... and while we're at, stop apologizing for things out of your control. I have no privilege. My husband and I work our tails off to afford our little apartment and our cost of living bills. We have decent jobs with decent benefits. He has been working his backside off since he was 16 - 30 years grinding it out to get where he is today. I went to college (paid for by grants, scholarships, and student loans which I am STILL paying back), earned my degree - with honors because I worked hard for it, and have spent the past 25 years working nonstop. I am not yet where I want to be but I know what work that needs to be put in to get there and I am dedicated to doing it. No one has handed me anything. No one has handed our kids anything or my husband anything. We WORKED for it and we are WORKING for it.

I know this post has more than likely ruffled some feathers but I needed to get it off my chest. The events of late have ruffled mine. It is like the world is constantly looking for ways to be offended. I would rather look for ways to celebrate. Seek out the beauty in the world and if you can't find it, create it. The only way things will be as those who are causing this mess wish for them to be is to actually stop calling attention to the aspects that do not play a part in any of it - instead of looking for a black/brown/green/purple/white designer, just look for a designer. Instead of looking for a gay/lesbian/transgender artist, just look for an artist. I know you may think you are somehow rising above all when you call out these aspects of an individual but in reality, there is no need to call them out at all.

A person is a person. A designer is a designer. An artist is an artist.

No one cares that I am a married, heterosexual, middle-aged, white woman with a mental challenge who earns just enough to keep her outside of the Federal poverty lines. When I step outside my door, I don't introduce myself as such - and neither does anyone else. We, as a society, need to stop pointing out every little thing and simply look at the bigger picture. A person is more than the sum of their parts. We seem to have forgotten that and spend the vast majority of our time and energy now dissecting and shining a spotlight on the parts instead of viewing the beauty of the whole person.

Race doesn't matter. Sexual orientation doesn't matter. Religion doesn't matter. The quality of the craftsmanship, the beauty of the design, the value of the product versus the price... this is what matters.

Period.

It is time

Chewy Chester Newman agrees - it's selfish crafting time
2019 is the year. I have decided. You can't change my mind. I'm doing it. It is the year that I am going to craft selfishly!

I say it every year but this year I mean it. I have spent the better part of my life crafting for everyone else but there are a few things I really want to make for me so I have decided that after 20+ years, I am finally going to do it and just use my crafting time for myself.

Okay, I admit it. I just can't be completely selfish... I will continue my charity crafting for the Disney Blanketeers but I am thinking a "one for one" system should work. For every thing I make for me, I will create one newborn hat to donate... or if I need to feel like I have actually accomplished something during a larger project, I will make a newborn hat. I honestly love participating in charity knitting so in a way, that is selfish... right?

But on the whole, my crafting is going to be for me... I promise... I mean it... this is the year... just look at my Ravelry queue... I'm totally serious...  Fine, I'm going to try... happy?

Sunday Snaps

We still have both the cats and slowly but surely, Bella has been coming out more and more.

I have made just a round and a half with this project, trying to do a 2x2 ribbing for the cuff.

Smudge has made her presence known and she apparently has nothing off limits.. even my grandfather's sweater chest!

Made an awesome supper that was gobbled up by all.

Seriously, she follows me around the house constantly.  It's cute and rather sad.

Just proving the power of blocking with my hat that I finished this past week.  Yeah, I dyed that yarn too!

Hobbit has been sneaking her crochet to school - teacher said she could do it during free time.  Such a Slytherpuff.
I started on the Temperature shawl Friday...
I was this far by Saturday night just before supper!
Added two more colors for the temperatures in Florida... can you guess which ones they are?
Seriously, she's still with me.  This chair is behind my desk chair.  Don't look at her though, she'll yell at you.
So that's been my week... cats, crochet and cooking.  Is there more to life?

Wednesday Wound-Up

Just proving that it does pay to block your items... in case you were wondering.
I made this hat the other day.. well, three days is what it took me but I finished it yesterday.  I love it.  I dyed the yarn myself so it's extra special to me because this is the first thing that I'm keeping that is something unique like this - the last time I ended up giving it away because the person gushed over it so much I just couldn't keep it.  It's okay though, I know it's being loved... just like I'm loving this hat.

Peanut got her slippers and she said she loves them... and then posted this on my Facebook!
This yarn is being redistributed to another project because my original design needs tweaking before moving forward.
I'm jumping on the bandwagon - something I never do - and I'm going to be making The Crochet Crowd's Octagons & Squares Throw.  I love this color palette too much to just let it sit and wait.  This blanket is going to be amazing!  I'm going to start it on Friday so that it will count for a March homework over at HPKCHC.  It's a smaller throw but the yardage is there for some serious bonus points if I can get it done.  I'm going to be crocheting like the wind, let me tell you!

I am still learning my sock loom but I haven't made enough progress to bother with a photo this week... maybe next time.  I think it's been a pretty good week though.  Lots of things that were hanging around got completed and some new things were on and off the needles rather quickly.

94... I think

All of my crafty endeavors from 2012.. at least all the ones I've photographed.  Not too shabby.

Sunday Snaps

This week was full of crafty goodness - silly projects for homework...

Dyeing the perfect match...

Hobbit tried trick or treating again... and again disliked all the spooky so she handed out candy...

I made serious strides in the Quidditch hat trials that started yesterday...

and all these hats are doubling for my Nerd Wars submissions so it is working out rather well.
My mama, a very talented nurse, also brought to light something that I had not even imagined.  I was describing the pain in my hand that was traveling up my arm and around my chest.  She laughed a little at me (not in a mean way, just the Mama way) and informed me that I have Carpal Tunnel in my right hand.  I will bring it up to my doctor when I go back for all those test results but my google research was a hard slap in the face with reality.  This will serious interfere with my crafting so I am going to spend today learning about ways to care and combat it.

Here's to a better week ahead with lots of smiles and fibery fun.

Sunday Snaps

I played around my Wilton's icing dye this week - this was on Knit Pick's 'Bare' in Swish DK

I named it "Twisted Summer" and I really love how it came out.

I have had this yarn laying about for over a year so I attacked it as well - it was wool/poly blend.

I really love the effect and we named it "Gamghee's Garden".

Currently, this is what I need to be working on because it's due in less than 14 days!
That's my week, in a photographic nutshell.  Just a bit of crafty goodness...

A bit of magic

Twisted Summer
I just turned in my Muggle Studies homework and I must say, I was rather tickled with it.  I dyed this yarn day before yesterday and it's finally dry.  I took some morning light shots of it and I'm still tickled with it.

I have no idea what it wants to be though - it hasn't told me yet.  I was thinking that it might be a beautiful hat to bring some sunshine and happiness to those dreary days that require hats... or maybe a sweet scarf that can be made wide and pull double duty as a stole.

The possibilities are only as limited as my imagination - and that's another bit of magic right there.

Well, I felt busy anyway

These are all the crafty things I accomplished this month
I thought it would be nice to look back at the end of the month and see what all I accomplished.  I always take photos of everything so I went through my pictures and this was all I found.  I felt much busier than this...
  1. I made Henry the Hedgehog (for HPKCHC).
  2. I made my owl purse (for HPKCHC).
  3. I dyed yarn with Easter egg dyes (for HPKCHC).
  4. I sewed a lining into my Aristotle bag.
  5. I dyed yarn with Kool-Aid (for HPKCHC).
  6. I dyed yarn with Wilton's.
  7. I made my first crochet dishrag (for a swap)
  8. I made mini socks (for HPKCHC).
  9. I swatched a hexagon (for NerdWars).
  10. I made a headband, learning Tunisian crochet (for HPKCHC).
  11. I made Aristotle (for HPKCHC).
I guess when you break it all down, it's not too shabby but I've been crafting non-stop all month and I only have these few things to show for it.  In my head, I had a veritable mountain of finished objects that would awe even the most seasoned crafter... but alas, only these 10 objects came to pass.

From a different angle, every single one of them was a product of me learning or trying something new - and I like that angle much better!  So there you have it - I learned how to do 11 new things this month and that truly is amazing to me.

Weekend Wonderment ~ 5/25 - 5/28

We've got a long weekend ahead before we wrap up the school year around here.
  1. I plan on watching an insane amount of movies - mostly because Hobbit was home sick today with tummy trouble and when she's feeling puny, the TV never goes off... much to my chagrin.
  2. Several swap packages are sitting open on my entryway table, awaiting their final presents to be made.  Working on these will keep me awake during all of the aforementioned movies.
  3. I need to write notes to each of my spoilees - I always forget to do this part so I might just do it now and get it over with so I don't end up at the post office, frustrated because I just remembered that I forgot to write the notes!
  4. That's my dye recipe book. I am hoping to add a few new ones over the holiday weekend - if I can get my hands on some wool at a reasonable price.  If not, I've got a pumpkin in my stash that I'm not crazy about... I wonder if I could overdye it...
So that's my holiday weekend.  Fingers crossed that Hobbit's tummy feels better tomorrow and our entire weekend isn't spent with her walking around all icky with her blankie, Henry and a bucket.  It's a rather sad sight.

Anything exciting going on with your family this Memorial Day weekend?

14 May 2012

Aristotle

It really is coming along rather nicely, isn't it.
That is what I'm going to name this bag... because the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.  If you break it down, I'll have done seven different techniques or new skills with this bag.  Seriously, it will be seven - look:

I dyed the yarn (twice really, with two different techniques actually but I only counted this process once), foundation single crochet and granny square adaptation (crochet bits for the bottom), knitting in the round, color work (remember, the purple top and strap are a new yarn), Tunisian crochet for the strap, felting, sewn in lining (complete with pockets and a possible zipper section).

That's seven different techniques and with the exception of two (knitting and changing colors), they are all brand new skills that I just learned this past month. It's so nice to be able to incorporate all of these little things together to make one item.  When it's done, no one will know any of this by looking at it - they'll just see Aristotle, a most amazing bag.

Sunday Snaps... and a Happy Mother's Day

It has been a very creative week around here! I finished Henry the Hedgehog...

Learned how to Kool-Aid dye yarn.  This colorway is called "Nana"...

I learned how to Easter egg kit dye yarn. This colorway is called "Hogwarts Harmony"...

I am designing my own bag and used up all of my Hogwarts Harmony...

I learned how to dye using Wilton's icing dye. This one is called "Tonks"...

I even tested to make sure you couldn't dye with the Wilton's on acrylic... you can't

I was surprised with some wonderful presents last night from both of my girls...

...and this morning.  That's her and I under the Geosphere in Epcot.
This explains why my housework didn't get done much this week. I thought I was having a fabulous week - turns out I was having a fabulously creative week! It just goes to show that creative people are happy people.

Happy Mother's Day to all - I hope you are shown as much love and appreciation today as I have been blessed with this week... and I hope it lasts all year through.

Icing dyes and recipe books

I call this one "Tonks"
Hungry? Unless you're looking to add a bit of fiber, this post won't help you with that at all... because I'm talking about latest obsession - dyeing yarn!

Remember how I needed a purple to finish my bag?  Well, I made it yesterday and I took my first step into dyeing with Wilton's icing dyes.  I have to say, I loved it!! Not only can I now jot down my recipes for fabulous colorways, I can honestly attempt to recreate them with a bit more confidence that it will turn out the same since the dye is measured and controllable.

I have even learned a few things along the way - Violet will split and turn more blue when it hits vinegar so you can bring it back to purple by adding some red or burgundy... and once the yarn has dried overnight, if it is still just a bit damp in spots, you can place it in a cold oven, turn the temperature to 200F and set a timer for 10 minutes - end result is dried yarn with no felting.  I know this works on worsted/aran weight yarn since I just pulled mine out!

I am having a great time on this new crafting adventure. My only issue - I've currently run out of bare naked yarn!

Weekend Wonderment ~ 5/11 - 5/13

And y'all know how it pains me to do this too... yeah, right!
As you can see, I was able to sit down and work through all 220 yards last night. It was wonderful!  The only problem was, I ran out of yarn before I finished my bag.  I  had a split second of panic and then I regrouped.  I went online to find coupons to one of my local big box craft stores. I knew the next step in my dyeing journey was going to be the Wilton icing dyes and I was prepared... sort of... okay not really but I am going there anyway!

After taking Hobbit to school, I took my coupons and my pocket money to the store where I was able to purchase the same base yarn and a 12 color starter pack for roughly $12 - incredible to me because the color itself is marked at $15!  As soon as I clean up the kitchen, and change my clothes, I am going to figure out how to make a nice red... I think that will work to finish off my bag and strap.

You'll have to stay tuned for the next steps because it will be amazing - I'll leave you with a little tease... I'm going to make a flap top for it too that will incorporate most if not all of the colors already used, plus one more!!

Addiction confirmed

This is what I did yesterday...

Yeah, it's Easter egg dyeing for a crafty soul...
and this is what I'm going to be working with today...

I can't wait until I can get to do it again - I am officially addicted to dyeing my own yarn!

08 May 2012

Holy wow, I'm proud!

My Kool-Aid yarn from yesterday, all dried and wound up pretty.
Lookie at all the yarnie yummy goodness!  I can't believe that I made that... all by myself.  I'm so excited about, I'm going to attempt to paint yarn with Easter egg dye today - at least that is the plan.  I even like the areas where the Kool-Aid didn't quite reach and if you look close, you can see little flecks of the Lemonaide... and no brown so that means, to me, that it wasn't a complete bust.

To celebrate this monumental occasion, here's an appropriate song for today ~

Okay, so maybe I just want to hear Josh Groban - but isn't he always appropriate?

Flying... appropriate homework

Flying homework assignment for HPKCHC - do something you've been too scared to try...
That was one of the class prompts and so I figured it was the perfect time to bust out the Kool-Aid and my wool. I've only been hanging on to it for over a month, paralyzed by fear that I would ruin it.

I am very pleased to announce that I did not ruin it at all!  Below is a step by step photo tutorial on how I did it, using the images from above.  If I can do this, anyone can... grab your crockpot, your Kool-Aid and your wool - let's cook up some colorways!!

I think I might need some help coming up with a name for this skein... what do you think it should be called?
